about us | paul's story | we have helped | can you help? | volunteers wanted computers for the disabled has been a registered charity since may 1998 and it's still the only charity of its kind in the uk. our mission is to help disabled people to communicate and participate in day-to-day activities that most of us take for granted. we do this by recycling computers and giving disabled people an alternative means of keeping in touch. since we began, we have supplied over 2300 computers to both individuals and organisations and offered advice to many others. we are different to many other charities, in that we do not put our own interests first. we don't use donations for management, strategy development, campaigning or fundraising. we don't have any paid staff and we pay the bills and running costs out of our own dla, dss and mobility money. there have been many times that our chairman paul harris has used his own money to pay cftd bills to prevent the charity from going under. we all work from the heart and not from the pocket. all of the money we raise goes into providing pc's to our disabled clients. we believe that if a donation is received it should be used only to help others and not to line our own pockets. all of our committee members and dedicated volunteers offer their services and time for free. our dedicated, able-bodied staff do a full days work and then regularly find time to help disabled people often until the late into the night, collecting donated computers and rebuilding or repairing them. without them, we would not have been able to supply the number of computers that we do. we supply internet ready multimedia pc's using new and second-hand parts, for distribution throughout the uk. we specialise in supplying the disabled home user, including those with learning disabilities, the housebound, the elderly and many other agencies, organisations and charities that help the disabled. we have worked closely with social services and other government departments. we also offer free computer advice on best buys, where and what to buy and what to avoid. all we ask from you is to cover any costs that our charity has spent when building a pc for you. we don't want anything extra from you, what it costs us is what it will cost you, it's as simple as that. a word on fundraising we provide computers and computer equipment to the disabled and housebound including those centres, clubs, schools and other organisations that serve the disabled. many of those with disabilities are on extremely low incomes and cannot afford to purchase a new pc so they call on us for assistance. but we can only operate with your generosity. we receive donations of complete pc systems as well as parts, which allow us to improve older systems. donations of laptops are excellent for those in confined living accommodation and these are desperately needed. we also seek monetary donations to help us with our running costs so if you want to donate, please click the button at the bottom of the page. if you are able to help in any other way, please get in touch. thank you! make a donation [email protected] 01268 284834 07949 530509 computers for the disabled 41 new waverley road noak bridge basildon essex ss15 4bj registered charity number 1069626 computers for the disabled - quality recycled pc’s and new parts supplied to the disabled, the housebound, disabled centres and home users by our non-profit organisation
